Planning permission granted for asbestos transfer facility

05 January 2010

A six metre square, secure storage area has been granted planning permission at Pectel’s Basildon site to temporarily hold the incoming double bagged and sealed asbestos waste. Two 16 yard sealed lockable containers will hold the waste within a secure facility surrounded by a two metre high fence and monitored by 24-hour CCTV coverage. The Standard Permit application for the facility allows for a maximum capacity of 10 tonnes of secured waste at any one time and an annual capacity of 3650 tonnes. The requirement for the storage area is to support Pectel’s focus on reducing daily vehicle movements following the recent purchase of a new fleet of asbestos de-contamination units and vans, by rolling out more efficient routing and collection procedures for Pectel’s asbestos waste.

Throughout the process Pectel Quality, Safety and Environmental Director Steve Haim, together with Pectel Waste Manager Jeff Letch, worked with The Environment Agency, Basildon County Council and Essex County Council Planning; including responding to all direct public concerns and holding a meeting prior to Christmas open to all local residents and businesses to discuss the plans.

“We arranged for a mock asbestos removal demonstration at our on-site training facility to demonstrate not only how asbestos is removed under fully controlled conditions, but to highlight the attention and detail taken in compliance of government regulations prior to and during transport and disposal. We also marked-out the actual area size of our proposed secure compound so people attending could visualise our plans.” Jeff Letch, Waste Manager.
