Esher 11 November 2016: At the 2016 Green Apple Environment Awards, Keltbray has won a Global Silver Green World Award for Victoria Circle, a Bronze Green Apple Award for Queen Mary Viaduct and a Bronze Green Apple Award for Keltbray Environmental.

At the 2016 Green Apple Environment Awards, Keltbray has won three awards, including a Global Silver Green World Award for Waste Management at Victoria Circle, a Bronze Green Apple Award in the Building and Construction category for Regeneration at Queen Mary Viaduct. Keltbray Environmental also won a Bronze Green Apple Award.

This is the first time Keltbray has won three Green Apple Environment Awards in the same year.

The Global Silver Green World Award was presented to Keltbray for its demolition and enabling works at Victoria Circle in London, where the overall environmental performance of the project was optimised through the re-use of 53,000 tonnes of demolition material in the latter project stages; to backfill the basements and in the construction of piling mats.

“This eliminated waste to landfill, saved 5,400 vehicle movements and the associated carbon emissions, and eased congestion in this already busy area of London,” explained Keltbray Group’s Environmental Advisor, Claire Fundrey, picture with Keltbray’s Energy Manager & Environmental Advisor, Jenny Cottrell, Trainee Environmental Advisor, Gemma Neal, Sales Manager Michael Lumb, Environmental Coordinator, William Moloney and Project Manager for Network Rail, Ben Ward (second right).

For the Queen Mary Viaduct project in East London Keltbray and Network Rail were rewarded for the good environmental practice and social achievements on site, in particular for the approach used in the demolition of a disused railway viaduct with 25 masonry arches to provide additional land for the university and the local community.

The scheme gained particular praise for implementation of sustainable practices on site, including the recycling of construction material, minimising waste, creating a ‘green roof’ to encourage bio-diversity and the reduction of carbon emissions associated with the project.

As part of the project, Network Rail will also transfer land previously designated for parking to London Borough of Tower Hamlets – to be used for neighbourhood allotments, benefitting the local community while also increasing habitat for wildlife and improving biodiversity.

Director of Property at Network Rail Property, Nigel Escott, said: “We are pleased that our Queen Mary Viaduct project has received this prestigious award, recognising the scheme’s contributions to both the environment and the local community. We are proud of our sustainable regeneration record and are currently progressing other development opportunities that will align with our place-making strategy to offer similar benefits around the UK.”

The Green Apple Environment Awards were launched in 1994 by The Green Organisation to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.

They are presented by The Green Organisation, which is an international, independent, non-profit, non-political, non-activist environment group, to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice by companies, organisations and Governments around the world.
