Matteo Di Giacomo is a Surveying Administrator with a background in Accountancy and Economics. Before joining Keltbray, Matteo was a manager in the hospitality industry so was totally new to construction.

Earlier this month, we had the opportunity to sit down with Matteo and ask him about his experience and career with Keltbray to date.

How did you get into construction?

I was called for an interview for the Quantity Surveyor Admin role with Keltbray at our Battersea project by a local agency. It was my first interview in that period as I wanted to change the industry I was working in, which at the time was hospitality. The interview went well which was unexpected as I knew very little about construction. I was really happy I got the job.

Tell us about your responsibilities

My job involves keeping paper work up to date for possible audits amongst other things. I’m also quite passionate about IT so I try to solve any technical issues we might have. On SmartWaste I have to upload any information to do with pollution from sites which I embrace as I’m passionate about sustainability. As part of this, I work closely with the environmental team which I really enjoy.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I get to interact with people at all levels, from Directors, to Supervisors and Operatives on site. I think that it’s important to be connected with people and not always be hiding in the office.

What advice would you give someone starting out in the industry?

Be confident and believe in yourself. Don’t be afraid of new things and challenges that happen at work. For example, in my role I order new kinds of plant and materials which I’m not always familiar with. Finally, always push yourself to learn more.

What would you be doing if you weren’t in construction?

Who knows! I believe fate brought me here. My ideal situation would be working for renewable energy and that sort of industry. With that being said, being part of construction and Keltbray is aligned with what I want to do so I’m happy that I ended up here.

Do you have any long-term goals?

I would like to work for the environmental team one day, even in the commercial sense. I’m passionate about the environment and sustainability as part of my degree looked at biofuel and renewable energy. I’d also be open to working in Health & Safety. I’m very open to new opportunities.
