Keltbray secured four accolades at the Green Apple Awards last week, for our work in driving forward the Circular Economy, the use of drones for utilities inspections, various fuel reduction initiatives across our projects and for delivering Social Value.

Representatives from Keltbray’s Environmental team were presented with the awards at the Houses of Parliament in the Green Apple Awards presentation ceremony on November 21st.

As part of our commitment to decarbonise our operations, we are tackling all aspects of our operations and services to the industry and working with our supply chain to create the best technological solutions.

Keltbray is thrilled to have won awards for the following initiatives:

Circular Economy

At Keltbray we see the potential for reuse in all aspects of our demolition and construction projects. The overall aim for Keltbray is drive and strengthen circular economy principles.

During works at several neighbouring projects, Keltbray have utilised long standing relationships with numerous suppliers, charities and organisations to see the potential in all materials for direct reuse and closing the loop of an otherwise linear economy.

Drones for Utilities Inspections

Back in 2021, Keltbray announced it had cut carbon emissions by almost 50% on its utility inspections using the DJI M300 RTK platform and its ecosystem of powerful cameras to collect better quality data more efficiently.

Reduction of Fuel Generators use on site

Keltbray managed to swap out fuel generators with a TBS (Temporary Building Supply) that supplies electric power directly from the mains on seven major construction sites in London, including Elephant and Castle shopping centre demolition works. On this site last year we had 2 no. 100 KVA generators consuming 26 L/h, we exchanged them with a TBS and in the last 12 months we saved 280,000 litres of diesel and reduced carbon footprint by 704 tCO2e.

Social Value

Keltbray’s self-delivery model means we take direct responsibility for delivering on our promises to consult, improve and leave a positive legacy in the communities in which we work. Through our Social Value team, we develop and deliver tailored local community development programmes.

Our award-winning employment programme has supported a wide range of individuals, including the long-term unemployed, homeless, those suffering from mental ill health and ex-offenders. Through Collaborations with various clients and organisations, At the Bermondsey project alone, we have supported 10 locals into construction employment, advertised 10 jobs and held 31 interviews for positions on site for local residents.

Kiro Tamer, Head of Environmental Sustainability at Keltbray commented: “We’re always looking for new and innovative ways to reduce the impact of our operations and cut carbon, as well as deliver on our social value commitments and have a positive impact on the communities we exist to serve, so we’re delighted to have been recognised with four prestigious Green Apple Awards for our hard work. These awards are testament to our commitment to sustainable development, and we hope these projects serve as an example of best practice to the wider industry.”

Gordon Cranston, Project Construction Manager at Keltbray commented: “We’re thrilled to have won this Green Apple Award for our use of drones on utilities infrastructure jobs. Innovation is at the forefront of our business and drones are the future, bringing so many benefits to our operations. Through a relatively small investment, we’ve been able to increase overall safety within high-risk environments whilst cutting carbon emissions significantly. It’s fantastic to be recognised for this achievement.”

Jamie Parkes, Group Social Sustainability Manager at Keltbray commented: “Building connections in the community is vital to supporting those who can benefit most from the opportunities that construction projects bring. These connections lead to initiatives that have lasting impact and deliver real Social Value. I’m so pleased that our continuous efforts to do so have been recognised by the Green Apple Awards.”
