KELTBRAY COMPLETES THAMES ROW CHALLENGE FOR AHOY

23 May 2018: On 19 May four teams from Keltbray Group took part in and completed the TeamOARSOME challenge to help fundraise for The AHOY Centre Charity in Deptford. Between them, they raised a whopping £19k by rowing a 50-kilometre stretch of the Thames; from Greenwich to the QE2 Bridge and back, to raise funds for the Ahoy charity, which uses water sports to build life skills for disadvantaged and disabled people.

Pre-Construction Estimator for Keltbray Demolition & Civil Engineering, Steve Mansfield, who has long-standing links to the charity, initiated the drive to recruit Keltbray employees for the 16-strong team event, where each team had six rowers and one coxswain. Combined they have so far raised over £35k.

At 4:2:45 The Wentworth House Partnership (WHP) team rowed in to take second place; 77 seconds behind winners from Erith. At 4:6:43 our Beeracuda team followed hot on the heels.

Despite starting the day two rowers down, The Shipface team came in at 4:14:16, with help from two Ahoy apprentices as last minute replacements. There was further drama for the Konstructive Recruitment team, which got caught up in a buoy and was untangled by the safety boat, but which still came in at a respectable 4:20:24.

All the Keltbray teams put in an amazing performance; sacrificing the chance to watch both a Royal wedding and the FA Cup Final. “As a member of Team Shipfaced, I can testify that this was definitely a ‘challenge’ and not just a merry row up stream. The rowers and their coxswains had to work together with grit and determination with the mental challenge as great as the physical, but it was all for a fantastic cause,” said Keltbray’s Intranet Manager, Hilary Bradley.

The Ahoy Charity is a sailing and rowing organisation situated in Greenwich, which provides support, tuition and motivational help to local disabled and underprivileged children. For more information about their work, see Ahoy
