Keltbray, the leading UK specialist construction engineering and infrastructure services business, recently engaged with engineering students at Sheffield Hallam University to provide education on carbon management.
The lecture, led by Kiro Tamer, Head of Environmental Sustainability at Keltbray, aimed to prepare students for their transition into evolving industries.
During the lecture, Kiro shared valuable knowledge about industries’ approach to managing embodied carbon and familiarised students with the associated terminology. Key topics included net-zero science-based targets, carbon conversion factors, management systems, and legislation.
The topic of sustainability has become increasingly important and now serves as a significant deciding factor for stakeholders across various industries. Mr. Tamer’s annual lectures on sustainability and carbon management aim to prepare students and promote a more caring approach within the industry. These students will be the next generation responsible for driving change to achieve global science-based targets of Net Zero by 2050.
Additionally, Kiro showcased some notable achievements made by Keltbray in reducing carbon emissions. This included the deployment of the first hydrogen fuel cell in the UK, the annual fuel-saving tournament, and circular economy case studies such as Woolgate Exchange.
Keltbray’s commitment to carbon management and sustainability has been further solidified by acquiring the PAS 2080 Carbon Management in Infrastructure certification, reinforcing their reputation within the built environment.
Kiro expressed his gratitude for being invited to his alma mater, stating, “It’s a privilege to be invited to the university where I studied and provide practical lessons on sustainability requirements, which have become some of the most in-demand requirements of the industry.
The lectures provide the principles of environmental and carbon management, giving students an advantage if they end up working in the industry, as they will already be familiar with its requirements.”
Dr. Abhishek Asthana, Director of Hallam Energy at Sheffield Hallam University, expressed appreciation for Keltbray’s contributions, saying, “We are very grateful to Keltbray for providing special visiting lectures and workshops on carbon management to our engineering students.
Their insights and industrial experience train the next generation of engineers who will carry the responsibility of operating sustainably for the future of our planet.”
