What interested you in pursuing a career in environmental management?

Honestly, there wasn’t one particular lightbulb moment for me. I pursued something I enjoyed and felt competent in, and I explored different career paths to find what suited me best. I found that environmental management offered a lot of variety – every day is different. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with so many great people, whilst working towards a meaningful cause!

How have you found your time at Keltbray?

My time at Keltbray has been rewarding and fulfilling! Keltbray’s focus on sustainability and innovation is inspiring, and it’s great to collaborate with so many colleagues who share these values.

What advice would you give to young people considering a career?

For young people considering a career, my advice would be to follow and explore your interests …sounds corny I know. Don’t feel pressured to choose a specific career just because it seems lucrative. Take the time to discover what truly excites and motivates you.

Seek out opportunities for placements, volunteer work, or part-time jobs in fields you’re interested in. These experiences can provide great insights into different industries and help you determine what resonates with you.

Lastly, remember that it’s never too late to change direction if you find that your initial career choice isn’t what you hoped for. Keep an open mind and be willing to adapt to new opportunities and challenges.

How do you perceive the role of women in construction evolving, and what are some key strategies for encouraging greater gender diversity and inclusion within the field?

The role of women in construction is evolving in a positive direction, but there’s still progress to be made. One strategy for encouraging female employment within the industry is by promoting training opportunities targeted at women interested in construction/ engineering careers. This includes apprenticeship programs, and mentorship initiatives designed to support women as they enter the industry.

Additionally, fostering a supportive and inclusive work culture within construction is crucial. This involves implementing policies and practices that promote equality, such as equal pay, opportunities for career advancement, and zero tolerance for discrimination. Creating a welcoming environment where women feel valued and respected is essential for attracting and retaining female talent in the field.

Lastly, representation plays a significant role in encouraging greater gender and ethnic diversity. Being female and from an ethnic background, I found where the achievements of women were highlighted through media, events, and awards meant there were role models who inspired me to pursue a career in this industry.

By working together to address barriers to entry and create opportunities for women to succeed, we can build a more diverse and inclusive workforce that benefits the industry as a whole.
