Skip galleryKeltbray delivered a programme of remediation, asbestos removal and enabling works at the former Richborough Power Station site in Kent, supporting its redevelopment into one of the UK's largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities.
A key element of the project involved the remediation of a former asbestos landfill under licensed asbestos working conditions. Using specialist in-house asbestos removal teams, contaminated materials were safely excavated, managed and removed while maintaining stringent environmental controls and monitoring throughout the works.
Alongside remediation activities, Keltbray undertook earthworks and site preparation works to create the development platform required for the future renewable energy development.
3 Key Facts
- Former asbestos landfill remediated for major renewable energy development: Keltbray's specialist in-house asbestos removal division excavated and removed asbestos-contaminated materials under licensed conditions, transforming a legacy industrial site and enabling its redevelopment into one of the UK's largest Battery Energy Storage System facilities.
- Integrated remediation and environmental management: Daily and weekly environmental monitoring was undertaken by Keltbray's in-house remediation specialists to maintain compliance, verify performance and ensure the safe delivery of all remediation activities.
- 30,000m³ of material reused on site: Following remediation works, approximately 30,000m³ of site-won material was repurposed to establish new ground levels and create the development platform, reducing waste and supporting a more sustainable approach to delivery.
Outcomes
-
Hazardous Land Prepared for Redevelopment:
The successful remediation of the former asbestos landfill transformed a legacy industrial site into land suitable for future renewable energy infrastructure.
-
Safe Management of High-Risk Contaminated Materials:
Specialist asbestos remediation works were completed safely and compliantly, protecting workers, the environment and surrounding stakeholders throughout the programme.
-
Development Platform Delivered for Strategic Energy Infrastructure:
The completed remediation and enabling works provided the prepared construction platform required for the delivery of one of the UK's largest Battery Energy Storage System developments.
