Navigating the Built Environment this World Environment Day
World Environment Day is the biggest international awareness day for the environment.
World Environment Day is the biggest international awareness day for the environment.
Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), it has been held annually since 1973 and is celebrated by millions of people across the world.
At Keltbray, our purpose is to redefine the way sustainable development is delivered. This World Environment Day, we’re proud to share our past initiatives that highlight our commitment to a greener future.
Our teams strive to implement unique solutions to optimise our operations in the built environment with the aim of reducing our negative impact on climate change and the natural environment.
Committing to Carbon Reduction
Keltbray have set emissions reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and aim to halve our total Greenhouse Gas emissions by 2030.
See our carbon reduction plan for more information on our journey to net zero emissions.
Embracing Innovation
We often trial and integrate new and existing technologies into our day to day and areas where we see the potential for improvement and an increase in efficiency.
Some of our most recognised trials and achievements include trialling hydrogen fuel cells, flywheel formula 1 technology and completely electrifying one our projects.
All of these have lent themselves to furthering out ability to integrate and seek oppurtunities for reducing carbon and improving project efficiencies.
Waste Management and Recycling Programs
Keltbray actively looks to manage various materials and waste streams efficiently and responsibly.
We are conscious of the fact that our working environments have a direct impact on global environmental factors and as such require thorough and compliant processing.
Our comprehensive recycling programs on construction sites help divert various waste streams from landfill. In 2022 we achieved 100% non-hazardous waste diverted from landfill and continue to support circularity at our waste processing facility at Plaistow Wharf.
Circular Economy
As a company often involved with a significant portion of demolition-based scopes of works, it is more important than ever to consider the complete life cycle of the materials we interact with.
Keltbray have taken significant strides in implementing a circular economy throughout our operations with notable projects including Aldermanbury Square, 76 – 78 Upper Ground and Woolgate Exchange.
In 2023 we also launched our Technical Services capability to drive the safe reuse of existing buildings and infrastructure through circular economy practices.

Promoting Biodiversity
Our teams conduct environmental impact assessments to protect local ecosystems before starting works.
Keltbray’s environmental sustainability team ensure strict compliance with environmental regulations and actively engage with site teams to ensure effective and safe site set ups to mitigate potential risks and monitor activity throughout the duration of the project.
Furthermore we actively employ the expertise of our senior ecologist to ensure we take well educated decisions to comply with the governments recently imposed biodiversity net gain legislation.
Employee Engagement and Education
The next generation of professionals are the next steps for sustainable development.
We empower employees with sustainability training and Carbon and sustainability workshop to educate personnel and inspire best practice moving forward within the industry.
We also look to engage with institutions to deliver insights into lectures on carbon from our recognised thought leaders.
Social Value
A critical part of our environments are the people that live and breathe in them.
Our dedicated social value team engages with local communities and stakeholders, ensuring concerns are heard and maintaining effective lines of communications throughout the projects.
Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are equally important to us, actively seeking to integrate EDI into our day-to-day in and around Keltbray to promote a thriving and inclusive culture.
Our social impact report provides a comprehensive overview of our work in the social space.
Looking Ahead
Our vision is to lead positive change in the construction industry through innovation and collaboration, creating a greener, healthier planet for future generations.
Although there is still a lot to be done, we hope we can inspire the industry to continue its drive towards a sustainable construction industry.
