Keltbray successfully delivered the remediation and redevelopment of a 7.7-hectare former gasworks site in Doncaster, transforming a historically contaminated brownfield asset into a safe and sustainable public open space on behalf of City of Doncaster Council.

The project involved extensive site-wide remediation works, including the excavation and treatment of approximately 160,000m³ of contaminated material, the bioremediation of hydrocarbon-impacted soils and the processing of site-derived materials to maximise reuse and minimise waste.

Following remediation, Keltbray completed a comprehensive landscaping programme including footpaths, fencing, topsoil placement, planting and seeding, creating an attractive green space while removing long-standing environmental liabilities from the site.

Key Facts

  • Transformation of a former gasworks brownfield site:
The project remediated 7.7 hectares of historically contaminated land, removing environmental constraints and enabling the creation of a safe and accessible public open space for future community use.
  • Large-scale bioremediation and material recovery programme:
Approximately 160,000m³ of contaminated ground was excavated and treated, while screened soils and crushed concrete were reused across the project to reduce waste and support sustainability objectives.
  • Integrated remediation expertise on site:
A dedicated remediation scientist worked alongside Keltbray's delivery team to oversee testing, validation and treatment activities, ensuring environmental compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

Project outcomes

  • Historic Contamination Removed

Extensive remediation works successfully addressed contamination associated with the former gasworks operation, removing environmental liabilities and improving the long-term usability of the site.

  • Sustainable Reuse of Site-Derived Materials

Through bioremediation, screening and crushing activities, significant volumes of excavated materials were recovered and reused, minimising waste export and reducing the project's environmental impact.

  • Creation of a New Community Asset

The completed works transformed a redundant brownfield site into a landscaped public open space featuring footpaths, planting and recreational facilities, providing a lasting benefit for the local community.
