Keltbray delivered the specialist piling and groundworks package for the Maria Fidelis development, supporting the HS2 Euston programme through the construction of a welfare facility and Construction Skills Centre.

The project marked the first full-scale deployment of Keltbray's proprietary HIPER® pile technology, incorporating hollow, impressed, precast and energy-generating foundation solutions within a single scheme. A total of 40 HIPER® piles were installed to support the piled raft foundation while protecting sensitive underground services beneath the site.

Working within a constrained urban environment, Keltbray combined innovative foundation engineering with integrated thermal pile technology to create a lower-carbon foundation solution that improved structural performance while significantly reducing material consumption.

Key Facts

  • First full-scale deployment of HIPER® technology:
The project marked the first live implementation of Keltbray's proprietary HIPER® piling system, incorporating all elements of the technology including hollow, impressed, precast and energy-generating piles.
  • Significant carbon and material savings:
The HIPER® solution reduced concrete consumption by 41% and delivered a 35% reduction in embodied carbon compared with the original foundation design, demonstrating the potential for more sustainable foundation engineering.
  • Integrated structural and thermal foundations:
All 40 piles were designed to operate as thermal heat exchangers, supporting a ground source heat pump system and combining foundation and energy infrastructure within a single engineering solution.

Project outcomes

  • Pioneering Foundation Innovation

The project successfully demonstrated the first full-scale application of HIPER® technology, validating an innovative foundation solution that combines structural performance with sustainability benefits.

  • Delivering Lower-Carbon Infrastructure

By reducing concrete consumption, shortening pile lengths and incorporating thermal energy generation, the scheme achieved significant embodied carbon savings while maintaining engineering performance.

  • Supporting the HS2 Programme

The successful delivery of the piling and groundworks package provided critical infrastructure for the HS2 Euston development, showcasing Keltbray's ability to deliver complex engineering solutions in constrained urban environments.
