Sellafield ILW Bulk Earthworks & Drainage Contract
Scroll to explore
Skip galleryKeltbray secured a £17 million contract from Programme and Project Partners (PPP) to deliver major enabling infrastructure works at Sellafield, one of the most complex nuclear decommissioning sites in the world. The project represented Keltbray's first major infrastructure contract on the Sellafield site and formed part of the long-term national programme to create a clean and safe environment for future generations.
The primary scope involved constructing a development platform for the Intermediate Level Waste East Zone in preparation for construction of Lightly Shielded Store 1 (LSS1), a facility that will safely store intermediate-level radioactive waste packages generated through the decommissioning programme.
Additional works included the delivery of access roads, drainage infrastructure and temporary utility services for both the LSS1 construction plot and associated accommodation facilities. These activities were critical to preparing the site for future nuclear construction and waste-management operations.
The project required delivery within a highly regulated and safety-critical environment. Sellafield contains more than 200 nuclear facilities and over 1,000 buildings, making it one of the UK's most significant long-term decommissioning programmes.
The award strengthened Keltbray's position within the nuclear sector following its appointment to the £485 million Magnox Decommissioning and Asbestos Removal Framework, demonstrating growing capabilities in regulated decommissioning markets.
